The Nawabs of Arcot occupied an ambiguous position during this period — nominally vassals of the Mughal emperor, effectively autonomous, and under mounting pressure from both the Marathas and competing European trading companies jockeying for influence along the Coromandel Coast. Small copper cash of this type circulated in the bazaar economy largely invisible to European commercial ledgers, which tracked only the silver and gold transactions that passed through Company hands.
