Obverse description Central square hole framed by a raised square border, with a Sogdian legend distributed around the hole in the four quadrants of the field. The inscription, reading n`tk bgy (Ruler Natak), is rendered in the cursive Sogdian script typical of 7th-century Eastern Sogdiana. The legend characters are boldly cast, occupying the annular field between the square frame and the irregular outer rim. The flan is irregularly shaped, consistent with the hammered coinage tradition of the region.
