Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah ruled the Carnatic as Nawab from 1749 until his death in 1795, but his authority had been progressively hollowed out by the East India Company, which by the 1780s effectively controlled his revenues and military. This coin was struck during that period of nominal sovereignty — the Nawab could still issue copper cash for local trade, but the Company had long since absorbed the levers of real power.
KM#36 is among the smaller denominations from his prolific copper series, issued to serve petty commerce in the Madras region where the cash remained the functional unit of everyday transaction.
