| 表面の説明 | Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 明 (Minh) at top, 通 (Thông) to the right, 命 (Mạng) at bottom, and 寶 (Bảo) to the left. The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within the flat inner field. A plain raised outer rim encircles the entire design, consistent with the small-type classification of this issue. |

Minh Mạng took the throne in 1820 following the death of Gia Long, founder of the Nguyễn dynasty, and these early cash coins were among the first struck under his authority. The "small type" designation distinguishes this issue from later, heavier castings produced as the reign stabilized — a common pattern in Vietnamese imperial coinage where early-reign pieces were cast with less consistency before standards were formalized. Minh Mạng would go on to reign until 1841, making these 1820–1822 issues the rarest within his otherwise well-represented series.
