| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, reading clockwise from top: 開 (Khai), 寶 (Bảo), 通 (Thông), 建 (Kiến), forming the legend 開建通寶 (Khai Kiến Thông Bảo). The characters are rendered in standard script (kaishu) style within a plain inner rim. An outer raised rim encircles the entire design. The coin displays typical patination consistent with cast bronze of the late sixteenth to early seventeenth century, with surface encrustation and verdigris visible in the fields. |
