Obverse description Four large Chinese characters in kaishu (regular script) are arranged in the traditional cash-coin reading order: top, bottom, right, left — yielding the reign legend Khải Định Thông Bảo (啓定通寳). The characters are bold and deeply struck in high relief, symmetrically disposed around a central square perforation that serves as the coin's defining structural element. The flat field between the characters and the plain outer rim is unadorned. No additional devices, mint marks, or decorative elements appear on this face.
