| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation. The reign title reads top-to-bottom, right-to-left: 康 (Kang) above, 熙 (Xi) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, forming the legend 'Kangxi Tongbao' — meaning 'Currency of the Kangxi [reign]'. Characters are boldly cast in raised relief against a flat field, enclosed within a broad, plain outer rim typical of Qing dynasty cash coinage. |

| Reverse description | Plain flat field divided horizontally by the raised rim of the central square perforation, with two Manchu script characters cast in raised relief on either side of the hole. The Manchu word 'Boo' (ᠪᠣᠣ) appears to the right and 'Chiowan' (ᠴᡳᠣᠸᠠᠨ) to the left, reading vertically, together forming the mint name 'Boo-chiowan' identifying the Board of Revenue Mint in Beijing. The reverse field is otherwise plain, framed by a broad, flat outer rim. |
