| Obverse description | Cast lead cash coin featuring the four-character inscription 開元通寶 (Kaiyuan Tongbao) arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, reading top, bottom, right, left in clerical script (lishu). The characters are rendered in a bold, slightly irregular style consistent with provincial lead casting of the Five Dynasties period. The inner rim (nei guo) and outer rim (wai guo) are both present, though somewhat uneven due to the base-metal casting technique. The flat field shows typical surface porosity associated with lead alloy production. |
