| Obverse description | Cast round coin with a central square hole, surrounded by a plain raised inner rim and an outer raised border. Four Chinese characters in clerical script (lishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 開元通寶 (Kaiyuan Tongbao). The characters are rendered in low relief against a flat field, with slightly worn definition characteristic of lead-cast coinage of the Five Dynasties period. |
