| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin with a central square hole, bearing a four-character Chinese inscription arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the standard Tang convention. The four characters 開元通寶 (Kaiyuan Tongbao) are rendered in a somewhat crude, provincial style characteristic of Sogdian imitative issues, with simplified strokes reflecting local craftsmanship rather than official Tang mint production. The raised characters appear within a plain inner rim, with a broad, flat field between the inner and outer rims. The coin exhibits irregular flan shape, consistent with local cast imitations produced in Bukhara. |
