| Obverse description | Central square perforation surrounded by a flat, unrimmed field bearing four crudely rendered Chinese characters arranged in the four cardinal positions around the hole, reading clockwise as the legend 開大通寳 (Kai Da Tong Bao). The characters are rendered in a notably rough, informal script style consistent with the crude provincial casting practices of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The outer rim is irregular and unraised, reflecting the primitive casting technique employed. Heavy encrustation and patina are present throughout the field. |
