Jiatai was the reign era of Emperor Ningzong, the fourth emperor of the Southern Song. By 1201, the dynasty had been confined to southern China for over sixty years, with the Jin dynasty holding the north — a partition that had forced a dramatic reorientation of Song minting activity toward southern foundries, particularly in the Huai and Jiangnan circuits. Cash production during Ningzong's reign was substantial but quality control across provincial furnaces was inconsistent, and Jiatai issues appear across a notably wide range of fabric and casting quality as a result.
