| Obverse description | Central square hole (cash hole) surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform order around the hole, reading top-bottom then right-left: 嘉 (jiā), 慶 (qìng), 通 (tōng), 寶 (bǎo), forming the reign title and denomination legend 'Jiaqing Tongbao'. The legends are notably weakly struck and irregular in relief, consistent with private (unofficial) casting rather than official mint production. The fields are plain and unadorned, with a raised outer rim encircling the coin. |
