Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around the central square hole, read in the traditional clockwise sequence of top, right, bottom, left. The inscription 嘉慶通寶 (Jiaqing Tongbao) identifies the reign era of the Jiaqing Emperor and proclaims the coin as universal currency. The characters are boldly cast in relief against a flat field, enclosed within a plain raised outer rim. The square hole is framed by a raised inner rim, a standard convention of Qing dynasty cash coinage.
