Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain raised rim. The reign title legend reads clockwise from top in kaishu (regular script): 嘉 (Jiā) to the top, 慶 (Qìng) to the right, 通 (Tōng) to the bottom, and 寶 (Bǎo) to the left, following the traditional top-bottom-right-left reading convention. Each character is rendered in bold, deeply incuse relief typical of Qing dynasty cast coinage. The flat field is unadorned, and the inner border of the square hole is cleanly defined.
