Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform fashion and read in the traditional sequence: top, bottom, right, left. The reign title 嘉慶 (Jiaqing) is placed vertically on the top-bottom axis, while 通寶 (Tongbao, meaning 'circulating treasure') occupies the right-left axis. The characters are rendered in bold raised relief with clean strokes against a flat, unadorned field, enclosed within a plain raised rim. The overall design is characteristic of the standardised Qing dynasty cash coinage style.
