The surface shows natural casting texture consistent with Tang dynasty bronze production, with the coin exhibiting an even patina across the reverse. This unadorned reverse is standard for Tang cash coinage of this period.

Aanvullende informatie

The Jianzhong Tongbao was issued under Emperor Dezong as part of a broader fiscal reform effort launched in 780 AD — the same year chancellor Yang Yan pushed through the landmark liangshui fa, or Two-Tax System, which restructured Tang taxation away from the old equal-field allocation and toward assessments based on actual landholding and wealth. The coinage reform was meant to complement this, though chronic underfunding of the mints meant output remained modest throughout the reign period.

The issue was curtailed after 783 when the Jingnan mutiny and broader military rebellions forced Dezong to flee Chang'an, effectively ending normal government operations for two years.
