Obverse description Cast iron cash coin featuring four Chinese characters in Regular script (Kaishu) disposed in the four quadrants around a central square hole, read clockwise from the top: 嘉 (Jia), 定 (Ding), 元 (Yuan), 寶 (Bao). The legend 嘉定元寶 identifies the reign era Jiading of Emperor Ningzong of the Southern Song dynasty (1208–1224). The characters are framed by an inner rim surrounding the square central perforation and an outer raised rim encircling the coin's circumference. The field shows the characteristic rough, pitted surface typical of iron cash coinage of this period.
