Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by a plain raised inner rim and an outer raised border. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically in the four cardinal fields around the central aperture, reading clockwise from the top: 皇 (Huáng), 建 (Jiàn), 元 (Yuán), 寶 (Bǎo), forming the legend 'Huangjian Yuanbao' — referencing the Huangjian reign era of Emperor Xiangzong of the Western Xia dynasty (1210–1211) and meaning 'Original Currency of the Huangjian Era'. The characters are boldly cast in a formal, upright regular script style with moderate relief against a flat, unadorned field.
