The Hongwu Tongbao series was among the first coinage issued under Zhu Yuanzhang after he declared the Ming dynasty in 1368, ending nearly a century of Mongol Yuan rule. Zhu had risen from destitute peasant origins — reportedly a former Buddhist novice and beggar — and his monetary policy reflected deep suspicion of coin currency itself; he repeatedly attempted to suppress copper coinage in favor of paper notes, the Daming Baochao, making sustained mint output during this period genuinely erratic.
The "Fu" reverse mint mark denotes the Fengyang furnace, the prefecture in Anhui that was Zhu Yuanzhang's ancestral homeland and which he elevated to secondary capital status.
