| Descrizione del dritto | Round cast bronze coin featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner rim and an outer rim. The four-character reign title inscription 漢元通寶 (Hanyuan Tongbao) is arranged in clerical script (lishu) in cruciform fashion around the square hole: 漢 (Han) above, 通 (Tong) to the right, 寶 (Bao) below, and 元 (Yuan) to the left, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional Chinese manner. The characters are boldly rendered in relief against a flat, unadorned field. The coin displays the characteristic flat, undecorated surfaces typical of Five Dynasties period cast coinage. |

The Later Han was the shortest-lived of the Five Dynasties, lasting barely four years before Guo Wei's coup ended the Liu family's rule in 951. Coinage production under such conditions was neither systematic nor abundant, and the Hanyuan Tongbao series reflects that instability — output was limited, and surviving examples with clearly struck reverse marks like this crescent are considerably scarcer than the plain type.
