Additional information

Hồng Thuận was the reign title of Lê Tương Dực, a emperor whose court was consumed by extravagance and factional violence almost from the start. He was murdered in 1516 by a palace official, ending both the reign and this coinage abruptly. The Lê dynasty would spend the following decades fighting off the Mạc usurpation, which makes intact administrative artifacts from Tương Dực's reign — coins included — relatively scarce survivors of a particularly unstable stretch of Vietnamese dynastic history.
