Hồng Đức was the reign title of Emperor Lê Thánh Tông, whose 37-year rule is considered the high-water mark of the Lê dynasty — a period of aggressive territorial expansion, including the near-total destruction of the Cham kingdom in 1471, and sweeping Confucian administrative reforms modeled on Ming China. Cash production during this reign was substantial enough to appear in multiple die varieties catalogued across Barker, Toda, and Hartill, suggesting organized, centralized minting rather than the ad hoc issues that plague attribution of earlier Lê types. The calligraphic regularity of surviving specimens reflects that administrative discipline directly.
