Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around a central square perforation, read in the traditional manner: top to bottom and right to left. The upper character reads 光 (Guang), the lower 緒 (Xu), the right 通 (Tong), and the left 寶 (Bao), together forming the reign title legend 光緒通寶 (Guangxu Tongbao), meaning 'Currency of the Guangxu reign.' The characters are boldly raised in relief within a plain, undecorated field typical of Qing dynasty cast cash coinage.
