Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left, reading 光緒通寶 (Guang Xu Tong Bao). The characters 光 (Guang) and 緒 (Xu) occupy the top and bottom positions respectively, while 通 (Tong) appears to the right and 寶 (Bao) to the left of the central hole. The legends reference the reign title of the Guangxu Emperor and denote circulating currency. The flat field surrounding the characters is unadorned, consistent with the austere cast tradition of late Qing dynasty cash coinage.
