Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu), arranged in the traditional reading order: top (光, Guāng), right (通, Tōng), bottom (緒, Xù), left (寶, Bǎo), together reading Guāngxù Tōngbǎo — 'Circulating currency of the Guangxu reign'. The characters are boldly rendered in high relief against a flat, unadorned field, with a plain raised rim encircling the coin. The casting is typical of late Qing dynasty provincial mint production.

Reverse description Central square perforation flanked by two vertical Manchu script characters reading Boo-he (the Manchu name for the Henan mint), one character to the left and one to the right of the hole. A small circle (pellet) appears both above and below the central square hole as mint or variety differentiators. The field is plain and the rim is raised, consistent with standard cast cash coinage of the late Qing period.
