| 裏面の説明 | Central square hole flanked on either side by a single Manchu script character, each reading vertically. The two Manchu characters together form the mint name 'Boo-he' (ᠪᠣᠣ ᡥᠣ᠋), identifying the Henan (Honan) Mint at Kaifeng. The characters are cast in low relief on a flat, unadorned field, with a plain raised rim. The script style is consistent with standard Qing-era Manchu mint designations found on cash coinage of the period. |

The Boo-he mint — romanized from 戶部, the Board of Revenue in Beijing — was reorganized in the 1890s as part of the Qing court's fitful attempts to modernize its cash coin production. This particular issue spans the years immediately surrounding the Boxer Uprising of 1900, when the court fled Beijing entirely and the capital's minting operations were severely disrupted. Coins attributable to this period from Boo-he are consequently uneven in their production quality, a known characteristic of the type rather than individual specimen variation.
