| Obverse description | Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform order, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left in regular script (kaishu). The reign title inscription reads 'Guāngxù Tōngbǎo' (光緒通寶), with 'Guāng' (光) at top, 'Xù' (緒) at bottom, 'Tōng' (通) at right, and 'Bǎo' (寶) at left. The characters are cast in low relief against a flat field, with a plain raised rim encircling the coin. The style is typical of late Qing dynasty cash coinage, with modest but legible brushstroke rendering. |
