| Obverse description | The obverse features four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole. The characters are read top-to-bottom and right-to-left, forming the reign title inscription 光緒通寶 (Guangxu Tongbao), meaning 'Circulating currency of the Guangxu Emperor.' The strokes are boldly cast in the traditional style of Qing dynasty cash coinage, with the characters occupying the four quadrants of the field. A plain raised rim frames the design. |
