| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by a raised square border, flanked by four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left. The four ideograms read 光緒通寶 (Guangxu Tongbao), meaning 'Guangxu [Emperor's reign] Circulating Currency.'
