Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain inner rim. The four-character reign legend 光緒通寶 (Guangxu Tongbao, meaning 'Guangxu Current Treasure') is read top-to-bottom and right-to-left in standard kaishu (regular script). The characters are rendered in a bold, deeply cast style typical of late Qing dynasty cash coinage. The field surrounding the inscription is flat and unadorned, enclosed by a raised outer rim.
