Obverse description Central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain inner rim. The four-character reign legend 光緒通寶 (Guangxu Tongbao, meaning 'Guangxu Current Treasure') is read top-to-bottom and right-to-left in standard kaishu (regular script). The characters are rendered in a bold, deeply cast style typical of late Qing dynasty cash coinage. The field surrounding the inscription is flat and unadorned, enclosed by a raised outer rim.

Reverse description Central square hole flanked on the left and right by two Manchu script characters reading 'Boo Ging' (ᠪᠣᠣ ᡬᡳᠩ), identifying the Board of Revenue Mint in Beijing. The Manchu inscription is cast in moderate relief within a plain field bounded by a raised outer rim. The upper and lower areas of the reverse are left blank, as is conventional for Qing cash coinage of this type. The casting quality is consistent with late nineteenth-century Board of Revenue issues.
