Obverse description Round brass coin featuring a central square perforation, characteristic of the traditional Chinese cash coin format produced by machine minting. Four large Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole: 光 (Guang) above, 緒 (Xu) below, 通 (Tong) to the right, and 寶 (Bao) to the left, together reading Guangxu Tongbao — 'Circulating Currency of the Guangxu Emperor.' The boldly rendered characters stand in high relief against a flat, recessed field, enclosed within a plain raised rim. The style reflects the mechanically struck coinage introduced at the Fuzhou Mint in the late Qing dynasty.
