Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese ideograms in regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform reading order: top to bottom and right to left. The four characters reading 光緒通寶 (Guāngxù Tōngbǎo) are evenly distributed in the four quadrants of the field, with 光 (Guāng) at top, 緒 (xù) at right, 通 (Tōng) at left, and 寶 (Bǎo) at bottom. The characters are boldly cast with well-defined strokes against a plain, flat field. No border decorations or rim beading are present.
