The Board of Revenue operated mints in both Beijing and at provincial locations, with the Chang'an facility serving the Shaanxi region through the latter half of the Qing dynasty. By the Guangxu reign, cast cash coinage was already an anachronism — machine-struck copper coins were being introduced elsewhere in China — yet traditional casting continued at conservative provincial mints well into the 1890s. The Chang'an mint's output during this period was inconsistent, and pieces attributable specifically to Boo-chang can vary considerably in brass quality due to erratic metal supply in the interior northwest.
