Gia Long, the emperor who unified Vietnam under a single administration for the first time in centuries after decades of civil war, authorized a broad range of cash coinage in multiple metals — zinc issues like this one circulated alongside brass and copper counterparts at the lower end of daily commerce. Zinc cash were generally struck for use in regions where copper supplies were constrained, and they were never considered prestige issues even at the time of minting.
The Nguyễn dynasty's cash coinage followed Chinese square-holed conventions inherited through centuries of tributary exchange, but Gia Long's administration issued in sufficient variety that die differences within a single type are common.
