Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform reading order around a central square hole: top to bottom and right to left, reading 嘉隆通寶 (Gia Long Thông Bảo). Each character occupies one of the four cardinal positions relative to the perforation, with the characters 嘉 (top) and 隆 (bottom) on the vertical axis, and 通 (right) and 寶 (left) on the horizontal axis. The legends are cast in moderate relief within a plain, unadorned field. The coin is bordered by a raised rim on both the outer edge and the inner edge of the square hole.
Obverse script Chinese (traditional, regular script)

Reverse description The reverse is entirely plain and uninscribed, presenting a smooth, flat field interrupted only by the central square perforation. A raised rim frames the outer edge and the inner edges of the square hole, consistent with standard Vietnamese cash coinage of the early Nguyễn dynasty. No mint marks, symbols, or additional legends are present.
