Obverse description Cast copper cash coin centred on a square perforation surrounded by a raised inner square rim. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed in the four cardinal positions around the central square hole, read in the traditional top-to-bottom, right-to-left sequence: 端 (top), 通 (right), 慶 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the four-character reign legend 端慶通寶 (Đoan Khánh Thông Bảo). The bold, well-defined characters stand in high relief against the flat field, and the coin is bounded by a raised outer rim consistent with Vietnamese Lê-dynasty casting conventions of the early sixteenth century.
