Obverse description Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged symmetrically around the central square hole, reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 道 (Dào) at top, 光 (Guāng) at bottom, 通 (Tōng) at right, and 寶 (Bǎo) at left, forming the reign title and currency inscription 'Daoguang Tongbao'. The characters are boldly cast in relief within a plain inner rim and a raised outer rim. The field between the characters and the rims is flat and unadorned, consistent with standard Qing dynasty cash coin typology.
