| Obverse description | Central square perforation (cash hole) surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform reading clockwise from top: 道 (Dào), 通 (Tōng), 光 (Guāng), 寶 (Bǎo), forming the reign title legend 道光通寶 (Daoguang Tongbao), meaning 'Daoguang currency' or 'Universal currency of the Daoguang Emperor.' The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) with bold, well-defined strokes typical of Qing dynasty cast coinage. The flat field is plain, bounded by a raised inner rim surrounding the square hole and a raised outer rim encircling the coin's edge. The overall design is austere and formal, consistent with standard Qing imperial cash coin conventions. |
