The Daming Tongbao series was issued by the Hongguang regime — the first of the Southern Ming successor courts — after the fall of Beijing to Li Zicheng's forces and the subsequent Qing occupation in 1644. Hongguang held Nanjing for less than two years before Qing armies took the city in 1645, collapsing the regime entirely. The Hu mint designation identifies Huguang province, one of several regional mints pressed into service as the court scrambled to assert financial and political legitimacy it could barely maintain militarily.
