Obverse description Cast brass cash coin of round form with a central square perforation. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 大 (Da), 通 (Tong), 明 (Ming), 寶 (Bao), forming the legend 大明通寶 (Da Ming Tong Bao, meaning 'Great Ming Universal Currency'). The characters are rendered in bold relief within a plain, raised inner rim and a wide, flat outer rim. The fields show characteristic patination consistent with cast bronze alloy coinage of the Southern Ming period.
