The Da'an reign period of Emperor Daozong saw the Liao operating a monetary system that remained heavily dependent on Song Chinese coinage imported across the frontier — Liao-cast bronzes of this period were never sufficient to displace them. The Da'an Yuanbao is among the more consistently encountered Liao issues, yet the dynasty's foundry output was sufficiently irregular that die workmanship varies noticeably across specimens.
Hartill's 18.17 and the Schjoth concordance both place this type within a broader Daozong series that spans multiple reign titles, reflecting the emperor's unusually long rule of nearly fifty years on the Liao throne.
