Đồng Khánh's reign lasted just three years, imposed by the French after they removed his predecessor Hàm Nghi — who had issued his own cash coinage before fleeing into the mountains to lead the Cần Vương resistance. The two reigns produced near-contemporary cash issues that today serve as a direct numismatic record of a succession engineered entirely in Paris. Đồng Khánh died in 1889, widely regarded by Vietnamese as a collaborator emperor, which did nothing to diminish the output of his board of works.
