Obverse description Four Chinese characters rendered in cursive grass script (caoshu) are arranged clockwise around a central square hole, reading 大治元寶 (Đại Trị Nguyên Bảo). The characters are boldly cast in raised relief within the flat field, with the fluid, abbreviated strokes characteristic of grass script giving the legend a distinctly calligraphic appearance. A plain raised rim encircles the design. The coin shows a green patina consistent with aged copper alloy.
