Reverse description Plain cast bronze reverse featuring a central square perforation surrounded by a raised inner square rim and an outer circular rim. Above the central square hole, a single Chinese ideogram indicating the regnal year is cast in relief; on certain specimens an additional character may appear below the hole. The fields are otherwise smooth and undecorated, typical of Southern Song Dynasty cash coinage. The example illustrated bears the character 二 (Er, meaning 'two') above the square hole, identifying it as a Year 2 (1242) issue.
