The Danish trading enclave at Tranquebar — held by the Danish East India Company since 1620 — struck these small copper cash pieces for local commerce, where they competed directly with Mughal and native South Indian coinage. The extremely low face value meant they circulated hard among the poorest transactions, and most survivors are accordingly worn flat.
