The Chongning era (1102–1106) under Emperor Huizong was one of the most prolific periods for Chinese cash production, partly because Huizong himself was an accomplished calligrapher whose brush-written inscriptions were transferred directly onto coin dies — a vanity that created intense imperial interest in coinage aesthetics. That official attention did not prevent widespread private casting, which was technically illegal but practically uncontrollable given the chronic shortage of small denomination coin in the provinces.
