Additional information

The Tây Sơn Dynasty that produced this cash coin was itself born from a peasant rebellion — the three Nguyễn brothers from Tây Sơn village led an uprising beginning in 1771 that eventually toppled both the ruling Nguyễn lords in the south and the Trịnh lords in the north, briefly unifying Vietnam under Quang Trung before his sudden death in 1792. The Cảnh Thịnh reign name on this piece belongs to his son, who inherited the throne as a child and ruled under regency while the dynasty slowly collapsed under pressure from Nguyễn Ánh's southern forces.

By 1801, Nguyễn Ánh had retaken Phú Xuân. The Tây Sơn monetary output was never systematically catalogued, and Barker remains the primary reference for attributing these issues.
