Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in the four quadrants around the central hole, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 景 (top), 泉 (right), 興 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the reign title and monetary designation 景興泉寶 (Cảnh Hưng Tuyền Bảo). The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief within a plain flat field, enclosed by a raised outer rim. The overall style is consistent with Vietnamese cast cash coinage of the Lê dynasty period. |

Cảnh Hưng was the reign title of Lê Hiển Tông, who ruled for 47 years — the longest reign of any Lê emperor — though real power throughout that period rested with the Trịnh lords who had dominated the north since the early seventeenth century. The emperor was largely ceremonial, and coinage issued under his reign title functioned as much as a tool of Trịnh administrative legitimacy as it did actual currency. This particular cash type saw an extraordinarily long production window, which accounts for the considerable variation in flan quality and copper color collectors encounter across surviving examples.
Toda 123 and Barker 72.1 represent the base type, but the Cảnh Hưng series is among the most complex in Vietnamese numismatics, with dozens of documented reverse varieties distinguished by single characters or dots.
